Ry Moran

Ry Moran is the inaugural Associate University Librarian – Reconciliation at the University of Victoria. His role within UVic Libraries’ focuses on the preservation of cultural heritage, repatriation and advancing respectful relationships to safeguard Indigenous knowledges.
Ry came to this position from the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation hosted by the University of Manitoba where he served as the founding Director. Prior to the NCTR, he served with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. As a core member of the TRC’s senior leadership team, he facilitated the gathering of nearly 7,000 video/audio-recorded statements of former residential school students and millions of pages archival records.
Ry has served on multiple boards including recently serving as Chair of the Royal BC Museum which resulted in a short tenure as interim CEO during a period of leadership transition. He currently serves on the National Indigenous Leadership Circle in Research.
Ry is a distinguished alumnus of the University of Victoria and was awarded a Meritorious Service Cross by the Governor General. He was awarded a goal medal from the Royal Canadian Geographical Society – the society’s highest honour – for his work on the Indigenous Peoples Atlas of Canada. In 2024, Ry received an Honorary Doctor of Laws from the University of British Columbia.
Ry’s life-long passion for the arts and music is an important part of his life as he continues to write and produce music. He holds a guest faculty appointment in Music and Reconciliation at the Victoria Conservatory of Music. His music can be heard in his Taapwaywin podcast and on tour in a production titled Echo: Memories of the World. His first full length book is scheduled for release through Penguin Random House early 2027.
Ry is a proud Red River Métis citizen and lives in Victoria, British Columbia with his family.
