Keynote speakers

The local organisers and scientific committee of the 2024 Conference of the International Transportation Economics Association in Honour of Richard Arnott are proud and delighted to announce that there will be two plenary session speakers for this year’s conference. Our keynote speaker will be Professor Tony Venables, University of Oxford. In addition, Professor Joseph E. Stiglitz of Columbia University, will deliver a recorded talk dedicated to the memory of Richard Arnott, reflecting Professor Stiglitz’s role as both mentor and co-author of Richard.

Tony Venables is a Senior Research Fellow in the Dept of Economics at Oxford, where he was previously BP Professor of Economics. From January 2021 onwards he has held the position of Research Director, The Productivity Institute, University of Manchester. Former positions include Chief Economist at the UK Department for International Development, Professor at the London School of Economics, and research manager of the trade research group in the World Bank. He has published extensively in the areas of international trade and spatial economics, including work on trade and imperfect competition, economic integration, multinational firms, and economic geography.

Professor Stiglitz won the 2001 Nobel Prize in Economics for his many seminal contributions, which cover virtually every field in the discipline. Since Professor Stiglitz was also a frequent co-author (as well as mentor) of Richard Arnott, his participation is a fitting capstone to a conference in Richard's honour.
