The Leeds Doctoral College Showcase 2014 took place at the 5th annual University of Leeds Postgraduate Research Conference on Thursday 4th December 2014.

Please visit https://www.leeds.ac.uk/research-leeds-doctoral-college for more information on the Leeds Doctoral College. 3 minute thesis presentations are available to view on the conference’s YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/Ldspgrconference/videos

The all-day conference celebrated the significant contribution that Leeds postgraduates make to the research profile and academic life of the University.  Participating in the conference competitions gives PGRs the opportunity to share their research with the wider research community and get valuable feedback. It also enhances their skills of presenting, writing, preparation of posters and, above all, communicating their research to a non-specialist audience.

The University of Leeds Postgraduate Researcher of the Year went to Gemma Gossedge (Biomedical and Clinical Sciences) for her work: A new paradigm for bowel cancer surgery. Runner up went to Joanna Elvy (Transport Studies) for her research title: Towards socially inclusive sustainable mobility: The role of social capital in participatory transport planning processes. Joint third place researchers were Nick Edwards (Design) with his project: First line of defence – Wiping out infection and Felicity Edwards (Biology) for her research topic: Maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem services in tropical landscapes.

The day also featured a three-minute thesis competition, held in the Great Hall, where sixteen postgraduates delivered their research to an audience, restricted by time and the use of one image to sum up their topic. A panel of judges decided Mike Jestico (Psychology) was the winner, for his thesis: The Power of photo-elicitation. Second place went to Nick Tasker (Humanities) for his talk: What you didn’t know you knew about language. Joint third prize went to Lesley Ellis (Sociology and Social Policy) for: Disabled or Dwarf? The influence of a mobility aid in the discrimination of women with Dwarfism in public spaces and Ella Holdsworth (Law): If the tag fits, wear it. If the tag doesn’t fit…what then?
