Breaking Stereotypes in Mathematical Science<\/h2>\n

All undergraduate and postgraduate students at the University of Leeds are invited to submit a picture\u00a0to enter the competition and get the chance to win \u00a3100 and \u00a350 in Amazon vouchers<\/strong>!<\/p>\n

\nDEADLINE<\/strong>: Friday 22nd September 2017, 5pm UK time
\nJUDGING<\/strong> PANEL<\/strong>: Dominic Hopkinson<\/a> (Artist in residence, School of Mathematics)\u00a0and Dr Elena Issoglio<\/a>\u00a0(Lecturer in Financial Mathematics)
\nJUDGING CRITERIA<\/strong>:\u00a0ambition, creativity, originality, quality of photograph, interpretation of topic
\nRESOLUTION:\u00a0<\/strong>the picture\u00a0resolution should be\u00a0appropriate to\u00a0be printed in\u00a0A3 [e.g. 300 dpi (dots per inch) @ 4961 x 3605 pixels]<\/span><\/p>\n

Before entering the competition, please make sure you adhere to the following terms and conditions:<\/h4>\n
    \n
  • You must be a student at the University of Leeds to enter.<\/li>\n
  • You may only submit images you produced yourself.<\/li>\n
  • You may submit up to 3 images (but you can win only one prize).<\/li>\n
  • You must make sure all those who feature in the photo\u00a0are happy to be part of the image.<\/li>\n
  • By submitting an image, you are giving the\u00a0School of Mathematics\u00a0permission to use it for publicity, for example\u00a0as website content, displays, posters, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      \nDescription: looking at\u00a0 our peers around us, it seemed clear that we , as black females, are not the stereotypical mathematics student. This picture that we put together is a way to bring this issue forward and remind other black females that maths is for everyone.\"\"

      \nDescription: The lady shall prove you that \"3+1=4\" is an example of narrow thinking!

      \nTitle of the photo: Human intellect rising to the truth through faith and reason
      \nDescription: Faith and science and particularly maths are often perceived as rivals or even enemies. With this picture I show that it might not be the case

      \n<\/strong>Name: Milette Riis
      \nTitle of the photo: Automorphisms of Graphs in Colour
      \nDescription: Presenting some of my own results on a special type of graph at my supervisor\u2019s 70th birthday conference (John Truss, right). I used both colour and animations as visual elements to make the slides more comprehensible. Breaking the stereotype that women need to structure talks in the same way that men traditionally have in order to be taken seriously.
