It traces the evolution from early scepticism toward computational methods to their current integration in scholarly workflows, highlighting breakthroughs such as Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR), stylometry, and large-scale manuscript clustering. I will reflect on pioneering projects, such as Transkribus, eScriptorium, and the Venice Time Machine, emphasising both the opportunities and ethical dilemmas posed by AI. Drawing on examples from medieval and early modern manuscript research, the talk highlights the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, technical literacy, and ethical awareness. The talk warns against the risk of marginalisation if scholars fail to engage with these technologies and advocates for proactive involvement in shaping the future of digital scholarly editing. Ultimately, I will call for a reimagining of philological practices in light of AI’s capabilities and challenges, urging the community to lead rather than follow technological change.

The Keynote Speaker

Elena Pierazzo, is Professor of Digital Humanities at the Centre d’Études Superieures de la Renaissance, University of Tours, where she directs the master in Digital Humanities.
